A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I decided we should move, and after a process of carefully thinking, web researching, and rock-paper-scissoring we decided the place to go will be London.
So far, I don’t really know the date I will be leaving, where I will be living, and where I will be working (well, I know only the name of the city, really). But I’ve been having several interviews, and I have a few pre-offers. All of those seem like OK places to work in, but I was expecting to find a GREAT place to work, like the ones Joel in his website speaks about. I might be wrong, and these places might be those mythical GREAT places, but so far they only strike me as OK.
It’s OK for instance, that in the interviews they don’t ask me to program anything. It’s OK that they are willing to ask a recruiter to search for a J2EE programmer (not a Java, J2SE, or JEE one, for god’s sake!). It’s OK that they really want me for a face to face interview, but they are not willing to pay for my plane ticket (neither am I, so there will be no such an interview yet). And of course, it’s OK that their main business is not selling Software, but they are companies that just use software a lot.
Well, so, everything is OK, but I still want GREAT. So if there’s anyone out there in London, who has all 12 points of the Joel test covered, is a Software Develoment company with just a few star products, and wants to hire a pretty good programmer, then I’m arriving in May! Send me an email and we’ll have a chat.
